Professor helen christensen digital dog
Helen Christensen is an Australian mental health researcher with an interest in using the Internet to prevent suicides. She is Director of the Centre for Mental Health Research (CMHR) at the Australian National University and a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Senior Principal Research Fellow. She is the author of over 300 refereed journal articles, seven consumer books and three open access websites. She is also executive director of the Black Dog Institute. Her areas of interest include the evaluation of internet applications/ online programs for the prevention and treatment of mental disorders, the quality of websites, the integration of new technologies into health care, the development of evidence-informed policy and methods to measure impact and dissemination.

Awards and Honours
Elected to Membership of the Academy of Social Sciences Australia (ASSA) in 2004. Chair and Panel Member, ASSA Membership Panel D 2006-2008. President Australasian Society for Psychiatric Research (ASPR) 2009-2011, which is the peak body for mental health research in Australia. She is also President, International Society for Research into Internet Interventions (ISRII) 2009-2011, a 400-member society which promotes research into Internet applications. She has been a member of 13 Executive Committees, Government panels and committees, 12 NHMRC Panels since 2001 including project, scholarship and training awards, and Chair/ member of the Victorian Centre of Excellence in Depression Research Grant Applications for 4 years. She is also a Director of the Australian Foundation for Mental Health Research, and was the chair of the organising committee that established the organisation in 2003.
Teaching/Mentoring
Supervision of 18 PhD students since 2004. CIA on NHMRC Capacity Building Grant 2007. Substantial mentoring of PhDs and Post Docs since 1999. Introduction of mentoring/leadership training at CMHR.
Pre-eminence in research
According to Scopus, in March 2010 an h index of 43 and with citations of 6692 “highly cited papers” last 10 years. Citation volumes which earn placement in the top 1% of researchers internationally in three categories: Psychiatry/Psychology; Clinical Medicine, and All Fields according to ISI Essential Science Indicators. Lead researcher on the first (2002), and the most recent Australian e mental health policy document (2009). 6 awards for the development and dissemination of e mental health services. 13 international keynotes or invited conference presentations last 5 years (most fully funded). Current NHMRC Grant Funding $5,961,090; Current other sources of funding $ $6,305,525.
