Healthcare distribution management association
The Healthcare Distribution Management Association (HDMA) is the national trade association representing primary distributors of prescription medicines and healthcare products. It was founded on March 15, 1876 under the name Western Wholesale Druggists’ Association (WWDA). The name was changed to the National Wholesale Druggists’ Association in 1882, and again to HDMA in 2000.

The association aims to promote the safe and efficient distribution of healthcare products and services, to create and exchange industry knowledge and best practices to improve the healthcare supply chain, and to advocate for safer and more efficient standards, public policies and business practices.
Congressional Testimony
Over the past few years, HDMA senior executives have testified before Congress on critically important issues related to healthcare, including drug shortages; prescription drug pedigree; the safety of the pharmaceutical supply chain; and prescription drug abuse and diversion.
In 2011, HDMA President and CEO John M. Gray testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee Subcommittee on Health on the issue of drug shortages. In 2012, Gray provided further testimony on this topic before the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee in continued efforts to address this growing issue. In 2012 Mr. Gray also appeared before the House Energy and Commerce Committee Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade in regarding the national problem of prescription drug abuse and diversion.
In 2011 and 2013 HDMA Vice President of Government Affairs and General Counsel Elizabeth Gallenagh testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee Subcommittee on Health on industry efforts to establish a national prescription drug traceability framework and pharmaceutical supply chain safety.
The Center for Healthcare Supply Chain Research
The Center for Healthcare Supply Chain Research (the Center) is the non-profit charitable research foundation of HDMA. The Center provides research and education on patient safety and healthcare supply chain issues. Its publications include: The Role of Distributors in the U.S. Healthcare Industry; HDMA Factbook; Specialty Pharmaceuticals: Facts, Figures and Trends; and, Specialty Pharmaceuticals and the Role of the Specialty Distributor.
Events
Throughout the year, HDMA holds a variety of meetings, conferences and seminars to discuss priority issues affecting the healthcare industry, including the following:
