Headwaters School is an independent school in Austin, Texas serving students from early childhood through grade 12. Beginning with a Montessori foundation and progressing to the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme, Headwaters aims to “cultivate identity formation, foster empathy, and embrace diversity to bring more peace to the world.”

Contents

Headwaters School has three campuses, with the Early Childhood Campus (“Springs Campus”) on Manchaca Road serving ages 18 months through pre-K, the Elementary Campus (“Creek Campus”) on Brodie Lane serving grades Kindergarten through 5, and the Middle & High School Campus in Downtown Austin (“River Campus”) serving grades 6 through 12.

History

The Khabele School was founded in 2001 and Primavera Montessori School was founded in 2002. The founding of both schools was influenced by the attacks of 9/11, and the desire to create a more peaceful world. In 2011, both schools merged. The merger resulted in the current three-campus school serving 538 students ages 18 months through grade 12.

The Khabele School changed its name to Headwaters School on August 22, 2016.

Ted Graf, the head of school at Headwaters School, said that the merger created a “stronger, deeper program for kids and a linkage from the youngest learners all the way up to middle and high school students.” The Headwaters School lists the organization’s core purpose, promise and principles on their website, stating: “These ideas serve as the foundation for our daily work.”

Student Body

Headwaters School opened with its largest enrollment of 538 students in the Fall 2016 semester.
