History

First published in 1859, The Observer is now the town's only weekly newspaper with the Hastings Independent (Hastings Independent Press) being produced fortnightly. Nowadays, the paper is edited and created by Sussex Newspapers, and printed by Johnston Press at their headquarters in Hilsea, Portsmouth.

Sister newspapers

The Observer also has sister newspapers, owned by Beckett Newspapers, called the Rye & Battle Observer and Bexhill Observer, both based at the same building as the Hastings Observer.

2015 Election Controversy

On May 1, 2015 the newspaper published a wraparound advert for the Conservative Party. The move brought condemnation and accusations of bias from locals, as well as a petition demanding an apology. Many readers commented, saying that they would be switching to the free Hastings Independent instead.
