Early life and career

Schwartz graduated from Rutgers University in 1987.

He started his career at J. B. Hanauer & Co., and then moved to First Interregional Equity Corporation. In 1989 Schwartz joined Citicorp, where he worked in the firm's credit training program and developed a specialty in structuring commodity derivatives.

Upon receiving his MBA Schwartz joined J. Aron in 1997, which was in the process of merging with Goldman Sachs. Through the merger, Schwartz joined Goldman Sachs as a Vice President in 1997, became a Managing Director in 1999, and a Partner in 2002. Schwartz became President and Co-COO of Goldman Sachs when Gary Cohn resigned to become the Chief Economic Advisor to Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States.
