In human mitochondrial genetics, Haplogroup L4b is a human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroup. It is commonly found in East Africa and the Southwestern Arabian Peninsula.

Contents

Origin

This haplogroup is believed to have diverged from Haplogroup L4, during the late Pleistocene in East Africa, in the Red Sea region (Kivisild 2004).

Distribution

L4b1a and L4b2b seem to be largely restricted to West Africa, with a Yemeni testing positive for the former (Behar et al 2008). L4b2a2 is the most common found subclade in click-speaking populations, but has been found as far north as Sudan, Saudi Arabia (Fernandes 2015) and Syria (Behar et al 2008). L4b2a1 is the most common L4b sub-clade in the Horn of Africa.

Tree

This phylogenetic tree of haplogroup L4 subclades is based on the paper by Mannis van Oven and Manfred Kayser.
