Haplochromis pharyngomylus is a species of cichlid endemic to Lake Victoria. This species can reach a length of 12.6 centimetres (5.0 in) SL. This species feeds mainly on mollusks with both bivalves and gastropods eaten in approximately equal proportions.

Major Threats

The main threat to this species is predation by Nile Perch (a potentially reversible threat). It is also potentially threatened by hybridization due to decreased water transparency (on account of eutrophication and erosion leading to increased sedimentation and runoff) interfering with mate recognition visual cues.
