The school took its original name, Cornwallis Junior High School, from General Edward Cornwallis, who founded the city of Halifax. The foundation stone was laid by the Lord Cornwallis of the time on July 1, 1948, which was the bicentennial of the city's foundation. The school's mascot was the chough, a small crow found in Cornwall, England.

On June 22, 2011 the Halifax Regional School Board voted to change the name of the school after Kirk Arsenault, the Mi'kmaq representative on the board, put forward a motion for the change. On January 25, 2012 the name was officially changed from Cornwallis Junior High School to Halifax Central Junior High, though is still referred to as "Cornwallis" by graduates and current students.
