Hal Andrew Lindes became a full-time member of Dire Straits at the beginning of 1980 while the band was promoting their third album, Making Movies. During his five-year tenure with the group, Dire Straits grew from playing small clubs to performing in sold out stadiums. He was featured in their next album, 1982's Love Over Gold as well as the 1983 EP, titled ExtendedancEPlay.

During this time Mark Knopfler was also involved with composing the music score for David Puttnam's 1983 film Local Hero, in which Lindes also performed on some of the cues. It was at this point that he discovered a passion for composing film soundtracks. Lindes toured with Dire Straits for their 1983 world tour and was present on the live album Alchemy Live, double album of excerpts from concerts at the Hammersmith Odeon in July 1983 which was released in early 1984. In early 1985, while Dire Straits were recording tracks for their Brothers In Arms album, Lindes left Dire Straits to compose film soundtracks full-time.

Since his departure from Dire Straits, Hal Lindes has composed music for films, and has won a Royal Television Society Award for the BAFTA award nominated film Reckless and a TRIC award for Best TV Theme Music. Lindes composed the soundtrack to The Boys Are Back, a Miramax film directed by Scott Hicks and starring Clive Owen, in which his guitar score is paired with songs by Sigur Rós, Ray Lamontagne and Carla Bruni.

In 1989, Hal Lindes teamed up with rock singer Fish to contribute guitar to his debut solo album following his departure from Marillion. Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors was released in January 1990, and Lindes co-wrote three songs on the album and played guitar on most of the album's tracks.

Lindes has also worked as guitarist or arranger on Third Stone from the Sun (Jimi Hendrix Tribute), El Becko (Jeff Beck Tribute), and Brian Tarquin's solo CD Fretworx, as well as The Music from Apparitions Score.
