Nelson starred in the Tim Burton film Big Fish as the younger version of Jenny (the older version was played by Helena Bonham Carter). Nelson was nominated for a Young Artist Award for her performance. In 2004, Nelson won her first lead role in the Indie winner short film 17 Inch Cobras. Later that year, she portrayed Rosanne Cash, daughter of musician Johnny Cash in Walk the Line, which was partially filmed locally in Memphis. The film, which was nominated for five Academy Awards, also featured actress Ginnifer Goodwin who, like Nelson, was an alumna of Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis.

Also in 2004, Nelson was asked to be a celebrity reader for the induction ceremonies of Dr. Seuss as his wife accepted his Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She along with Spencer Breslin, Alyson Stoner, Cole Sprouse, and Dylan Sprouse read from the classic One Fish Two Fish.

Between 2008 and 2010 Nelson starred in three independent films: A Fix (2008), Becoming Jesse Tate (2009), and A Disjointed Proposal (2010).
