History

Whatton is a category c12 prison which holds adult male sex offenders. It opened as a detention centre in the 1960s and since May 1990 it has held sex offenders who participate in the Sex Offenders Treatment Programme.

A 2011 report, carried out by the IMB (Independent Monitoring Boards) branded Whatton as 'inhumane'in its housing of inmates. Prisoners were still being housed in three or four bed dormitories. The report also highlighted concerns about inadequate toilet facilities.

A further IMB report in 2013 revealed that many inmates were waiting up to two years for treatment, due to 'inadequate' funding.

Information

HMP Whatton holds adults male sex offenders and one of the largest treatment-focused prison establishments for sex offenders in Europe. Whatton provides a series of learning and skills-based activities, including education, vocational training, industrial workshops and manufacturing, and gardening. There are also a large range of treatment programmes targeting offending and offense-related behaviors, including SOTP (Sex Offender Treatment Programme), the Enhanced Thinking Skills training, and CALM (Controlling Anger and Learning to Manage it). The prison also runs a Listener Scheme, providing a peer-support system for those who wish to talk to someone and/or are considered to be at risk of suicide or self-harm.

A large expansion of Whatton was completed in 2008, increasing the capacity of the prison by 500 places.
