Guy St. Clair (born 1940) is an American librarian and knowledge management/knowledge services strategist. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia and the University of Illinois.

Contents

He founded the One-Person Librarian newsletter, coining the term "one-person librarian", now referred to as "solo librarianship." He is a past-president (1991–1992) of the Special Libraries Association (SLA). He was awarded SLA’s Professional Award in 1989 in recognition of his work in one-person librarianship. He was named to SLA's Hall of Fame in 2010 for his identification of knowledge services as the management methodology converging information management, knowledge management, and strategic learning, asserting that knowledge services is "the practical side of KM." In September, 2015 he became a Life Member of SLA.

He is currently Lecturer, Knowledge Services, for the Postbaccalaureate Studies Program at the School of Professional Studies, Columbia University in the City of New York. The course he teaches (usually twice each year) is "Managing Information and Knowledge: Applied Knowledge Services."

In addition to his work with Columbia University, Guy St. Clair is the President and Consulting Specialist for Knowledge Services for SMR International in New York, NY. In this work, he is recognized as a knowledge services evangelist in the KM/knowledge services management community.

His book SLA at 100: From 'Putting Knowledge to Work' to Building the Knowledge Culture" traces the history of the Special Libraries Association. In the book's Epilogue, St. Clair defines the knowledge culture and, in describing knowledge services, offers his understanding of the role of knowledge services in organizational management, whether in for-profit, non-profit, or not-for-profit organizations. In "Knowledge Services: A Strategic Framework for the 21st Century Organization" St. Clair acknowledges the success of knowledge services as a management methodology, asserting that the practice has become a recognized framework for strategic knowledge management applicable to all businesses and organizations, moving beyond management and leadership issues in library and information science.
