Plot
In the hardened world of the American Frontier, a group of nefarious characters seek vengeance for atrocities committed against them by a vicious outlaw. Bonded by a profound brotherhood and tormented by tragic events, two men; Ira Berenger and Ashley Hollis, fight for salvation and moral justice in post-Civil War America. The two ex-soldiers band alongside frontier woman Calamity Jane, in a manhunt for the outlaw, John Wesley Hardin. In the sleepy town of Dead Horse, Ira and Ashley infiltrate the Dead Horse Saloon, viciously attacking members of Hardin's gang, seeking answers to the location of Hardin himself. Outside the ominous saloon, Calamity Jane serves as a lookout while drowning her horrific memories and numbing her nerves with whiskey. Ira and Ashley's interrogation tactics escalate to a climatic boiling point of questionable punishment, revealing the darkness that resides in the hearts of men.
Cast
Background
In the fall of 2013, it was announced that Quentin Tarantino was developing and casting The Hateful Eight. Guns of Purgatory's writers wanted to develop characters and audition for roles of that caliber. The decision was made to make an audition / short film for that opportunity. As time went on, the character research and development exponentially grew, as did the personal interest of the writers in their own creation. This project snowballed from its inception, propelled by two men’s inability to walk away from these complex characters and the unforgiving world they created.
Filming
Guns of Purgatory was filmed on location at the John Scott Ranch in Longview, Alberta, Canada, over 6 consecutive days, with the help of 120 cast and crew members. Principle photography commenced on March 29, 2016 and wrapped April 4th 2016. This film was loosely based on historical accounts and figures, and has been fictionalized for dramatization purposes. Consultations were made with a Navajo language and history advisor for accurate cultural representations. Hero actors spent up to 6 days horseback riding in the pre-production phase. The director, members of the production team, and applicable cast members prepared for authentic 'gunplay' with firearms training. Cast were involved in several rehearsals both on and off set with legendary stunt coordinator Doug Coleman.
Music
An original score was composed and recorded by Boreal Sons. Music supervision was provided by Michael Bernard Fitzgerald.
