Gundog Group

Gundog Group is the name of a breed Group of dogs, used by kennel clubs to classify a defined collection of hunting dog breeds. Different kennel clubs may not include the same breeds in their Gundog Group. Some major kennel clubs do not have a Gundog Group, placing gundog breeds into other groups.

The Gundog Group is used by The Kennel Club (UK), the Australian National Kennel Council, the New Zealand Kennel Club, and the United Kennel Club (US).

The international kennel club federation, the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, lists most gundog breeds by their hunting style or function in Group 8 Retrievers - Flushing Dogs - Water Dogs.

The Canadian Kennel Club and the American Kennel Club place gundog breeds in their Sporting Dogs Group.

Gundogs

Gundogs are types of hunting dogs primarily used to hunt birds in a variety of settings. The name refers to breeds of Retrievers, Setters, Flushing dogs and Spaniels, Water dogs, and Pointing breeds.

Other organizations

The term "Gundog Group" is often informally used by minor kennel clubs, breed clubs, sporting clubs, and Internet-based dog businesses. Many new or rare breeds, not yet recognized by any major registry, could eventually be listed in the Gundog Group or the Sporting Group of a major kennel club, such as the Canadian Kennel Club or the American Kennel Club.
