History

David Nilssen and Jeremy Ames co-founded Guidant Financial in 2003. According to Nilssen, their goal was to help individuals self-direct their IRA or 401(k) “to a variety of investment opportunities, including the purchase of a business or franchise.”

In 2006, Guidant expanded to Atlanta, Georgia and Phoenix, Arizona. A fourth office was opened in Denver, Colorado in 2007.

In 2009, Guidant temporarily halted small business financing services after the IRS issued a field directive on how to evaluate “Rollovers as Business Startups." Less than a month later, the company resumed small business lending after confirming its services were in compliance with the law.

From 2008-2011, during the peak of the financial crisis, Guidant’s employee base doubled and client inquiries increased by 196 percent.

Recognition

Guidant received an Inc. Hire Power Award in 2012, ranking 7th in the Revenue category.

Guidant Financial was a U.S. Chamber of Commerce Blue Ribbon Small Business in 2007 and 2008. Washington CEO Magazine named it one of the “best companies to work for” in 2007 and 2008.

David Nilssen was a 2008 and 2009 finalist for Ernst and Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year award.

Guidant ranked on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest growing companies in 2009 and 2010.

David Nilssen and Jeremy Ames were recognized as the Small Business Administration’s National Young Entrepreneurs of the Year (2007).
