Epidemiologist and Global Health Advocate Gregg Gonsalves | 2018 MacArthur Fellow


Gregg Gonsalves is an HIV/AIDS activist and advocate. He began working with ACT UP in 1990, going on to found Treatment Action Group. He found out he was HIV+ in 1995. He has authored three reports of HIV and written many publications including the 1992 critical review AIDS research at the NIH and a report from the International Treatment Preparedness Coalition in 2006. In 1992 one of his reports resulted in the Clinton Administration reorganising of AIDS research, and he continued to lobby the administration in his role as policy director of the Treatment Action Group in New York. At the International AIDS Conference, held in Toronto, Gonsalves gave a powerful speech on the 25 years of AIDS. Gregg Gonsalves has completed studies at Yale University. In 2008, he received $100,000 as the first recipient of the AIDS Leadership Award from the John M. Lloyd Foundation. He is currently working to improve access to HIV treatment in Southern Africa with the AIDS and Rights Alliance of Southern Africa (ARASA).
