Personal life

Gray Malin was born in Dallas, Texas, and attended Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. He majored in Marketing and received a minor in photography. He currently lives in the West Hollywood area of Los Angeles, California with his husband and dog in a renovated 1930s bungalow.

Career

After moving to Los Angeles for an internship at Paramount, Malin started his business selling photographs from a small booth at a West Hollywood Sunday swap meet near his current home. In 2009, he attracted public attention with his Prada Marfa series, which was a sequence created with the assistance of the local township in Marfa, Texas.

Launching his namesake brand, Gray Malin, in 2013, his work hangs in homes across the world and is owned by private and public collectors. He since has created private collections in remote locations such as Antarctica, Namibia and Bhutan while also developing commercial recognition for inventive aerial beach, ski and park scenes from around the world. Malin is also well known for his conceptual fine-art series like Gray Malin at the Parker, which features exotic animals living within the famed hotel. His first public art installation is currently on view on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, curated by the City of West Hollywood. Malin has collaborated with global brands such as Veuve Clicquot, Sperry Top-Sider, and Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts, engaging diverse audiences to experience his work in new ways. Malin's first monograph, BEACHES, documenting five years of work spanning twenty cities over six continents was recently awarded the accolade of New York Times Best Seller.

Other ventures

In 2015, Gray Malin partnered with international hotel chain Le Méridien for The Follow Me Campaign. The exhibition will feature Malin’s photographs as part of a video installation viewable in hotel lobbies worldwide. The installation features stills by Gray Malin, as well as video footage of him at work. Destinations seen in the installation include Bhutan; Dubai; Split, Croatia; and Seychelles.
