After starring with the Regina Pat Canadians in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League, Black played major junior hockey with the Swift Current Broncos in the Western Hockey League (WHL). Black was drafted by the New Jersey Devils in the fifth round, 135th overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

On April 10, 2014, the Albany Devils signed him to an amateur tryout contract, signalling the conclusion of his junior career. On April 22, he signed to a three-year entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils, starting in 2014–15 season.

After two seasons in AHL, Black was traded along with Paul Thompson to the Florida Panthers in exchange Marc Savard's contract and a second-round pick in 2018 NHL Entry Draft.
