Taxonomy

Species from Melanesia and Australia which were formerly included in Gonocephalus are now placed in the genus Hypsilurus. Furthermore, genetic data suggest that Gonocephalus robinsonii is only distantly related to other Gonocephalus, rendering the genus non-monophyletic.
Conservation status

The International Union for Conservation of Nature has assessed five Gonocephalus species; one of them (Gonocephalus grandis) is classified as of "Least Concern", whereas the other four are "Data Deficient".
Species
As of 2013, Gonocephalus contains the following 17 species:

Nota bene: A binomial authority in parentheses indicates that the species was originally described in a genus other than Gonocephalus.
