"Gone" is a song by American boy band NSYNC. It was released as the second single from their third studio album, Celebrity. The single debuted on the band's 2001 PopOdyssey World Tour, during the summer of 2001. The commercial release of the single did not occur until Summer 2001. In 2002, Bachata group, Aventura covered the song on their album, We Broke the Rules.

Contents

The song was nominated at the 44th Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, but lost to U2's "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of".

In April 2002, a remix of the track, entitled the "Gone Clubbin' I'll Be Back Late Mix", appeared as a double A-side with The Neptunes' remix of "Girlfriend" in several countries, however, was released as a solo single in both Europe and Australia. This was also featured on the 2002 compilation album Now That's What I Call Music! 9. Timberlake stated that the song was originally intended for Michael Jackson, but Jackson wanted to record the song as a duet between himself and Timberlake.

Music video

The music video for "Gone" was directed by Herb Ritts and filmed in August 2001. However, the music video itself was not released until late September 2001, due to the September 11 attacks. The video is shot in monochrome, and has shots similar to Charlie Chaplin-esque footage. The video is a mixture of flashbacks of Justin Timberlake's video girlfriend, played by Croatian fashion model Korina Longin, and his world currently, all filmed in an apartment.

The video shows flashbacks of his girlfriend's birthday party, and random parts in their apartment where emotional moments taken place. The video was a hit, becoming NSYNC's eighth number 1 video for TRL and MuchMusic. This video and their other music video "Pop" even got spins on BET's 106 & Park, making NSYNC the only all-white band to ever get rotation on the show. The video debuted on TRL was September 27, 2001. The music video was nominated for Video of the Year at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, but it lost to "Without Me" by Eminem. MADtv spoofed the video on November 24, 2001 with "John", about trying to find the toilet after eating too much Taco Bell food.

Chart performance

The single proved to be even more successful than previous single, "Pop". The single peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 13, 2001. It also reached number 14 on the Hip Hop/R&B Airplay charts, becoming the only pop boy band to chart there. The single also hit number 27 on the Adult Contemporary chart. The song was also a hit abroad, hitting number 28 in Canada, number 24 in the UK, number 21 in Japan and number 43 in Sweden.
