Glossword is an open source tool written in PHP intended to create and publish an online multilingual dictionary, glossary, or reference.

History

Glossword was started by Dmitry N. Shilnikov as simple web-based dictionary management system for his own needs when he has studied in Moscow University for the Humanities in 2001.

Several times the development of the software has been closed and reopened again because of several reasons, including the lack of time.

    Features provided by the program include:

    1. Web interface;
    2. Import data from TSV, CSV, XML, Plain text, Glossword XML;
    3. Export data to various formats: CSV, TSV, XML, Glossword XML;
    4. Indexing and searching through millions of definitions;
    5. Automatically generated alphabetical index for dictionary;
    6. Multilevel cache engine improves productivity for an HTML-output;
    7. UTF-8 encoding. Multiple languages can be used in a one dictionary at the same time;

    Versions

    There are two different versions of Glossword:

  • 1.9.x - component for a CMS.
  • 1.8.x and below - stand-alone web-application.
