The Graduate School of Management, Globis University (グロービス経営大学院, Gurōbisu keiei daigakuin) is a graduate business school in Tokyo, Japan. The school offers part-time MBA programs on weekdays and weekends in Japanese and English. It launched a full-time MBA program in September 2012.

Reputation and ranking

Globis was ranked first among Japanese MBA schools by Nikkei Career Magazine for 2010 in student satisfaction. In a survey by Nikkei Inc. and Nikkei Human Resources Inc. conducted in July 2012, Globis ranked third in the Top Popularity Ranking of business schools in Japan, surpassing well-known traditional business schools such as Hitotsubashi and Aoyama Gakuin. When MBA students and graduates were asked to rank their favorite business schools in the same survey, the Globis MBA was ranked 1st in East Japan and 2nd in West Japan.

It is currently the fastest growing business school in Japan educating over 7,000 students each year.

Globis also provides corporate training to Japan’s largest corporations and has been praised by many for its practical curriculum and experienced lecturers.

With its "MBA Management Book Series", Globis has spread its influence even further by selling over 1.3 million copies throughout Japan.

Globis is considered as a significant indicator to the acceptance of the MBA system in Japan.

History

Founded in 1992, Globis began as a one-room school with a set of translated Harvard Business School case studies. Led by Yoshito Hori, it has grown rapidly. Compared to the Harvard program that inspired Hori, the accent is more on practice than theory.

In 1992 Globis Corporation was established and the Globis Management School (GMS) was formed as a business.

In 1993 the Globis Organizational Learning (GOL) business was founded, and the Globis Management School, Osaka campus opened. The Nagoya, Sendai and Fukuoka campuses would open in 2003, 2012 and 2013 respectively. A distance-learning program using case studies started in 1994.

In 1996 a joint MBA program was started with the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom. (It closed in 2007.)

In 2000 the school started providing e-learning content. In 2005 the Globis Executive School (GES) for executives and senior management opened.

In 2006 the Graduate School of Management, Globis University (Postgraduate Studies of Management) opened. The incorporating entity of the Graduate School of Management, Globis University was changed in 2008 to an educational corporation.

Globis Shanghai and Globis Singapore were launched in 2012.

Campuses and offices

Globis has five campuses in Japan. The largest, in Nibanchō, central Tokyo, offers Japanese- and English-language programs. Japanese-language programs are offered at the campuses in Yodogawa-ku, Osaka; Nagoya; Sendai; and Fukuoka.

Globis is planning to build overseas campuses. In 2012, it opened offices in Shanghai and Singapore that train people in personnel management and provide management consultancy to corporations.

Part-time MBA program

Globis offers a part-time MBA program in both Japanese (GMBA) and English (IMBA). Courses are held on evenings and weekends, and are offered every quarter. To graduate, students choose 24 courses out of the total 42 courses available. Students can therefore graduate in two years, or may take up to five years to graduate, depending on their individual needs.

The curriculum is divided in three types of courses:

  • Fundamental courses: Fundamental courses offer several introductory topics that help develop students' basic management knowledge. Core courses use the case method, which allows students to make decisions in real business situations while using different business frameworks and theories.
  • Applied courses: Applied courses challenge students to develop a broader perspective and to use higher-level analytical skills in more complex situations. These include raising venture capital, financing mergers, practicing industrial and consumer marketing, and exhibiting leadership ability.
  • Specialized courses: Specialized courses help students become leaders who can launch a new initiative or kick-start a stagnating business by employing a cross section of management skills.
  • Full-time MBA program

    Globis launched its full-time MBA program in September 2012. It takes one year and 48 credits are required to graduate. Courses are similar to those of the part-time program but are given during the daytime. Career and housing services are provided to full-time students as most come from overseas. Globis first participated in the QS MBA Tour in 2010 to provide information about the new program to potential students.

    Admissions

    There are four rounds of admissions for the MBA program. Potential students may apply in the September, November and January rounds for the part-time MBA; in the November, January, and March rounds for the full-time MBA.

  • President's session

    During the President's session, President Hori talks about his experiences at Harvard Business School, his visions as an entrepreneur and his goals for the Globis MBA program. Afterward, students discuss issues about leadership and other topics through conversations with him.

    Cross-cultural events / Student conferences

    Globis University hosts the ASKA (Assembly for Synergy, Knowledge, and Ambition) conference, where many distinguished leaders gather with students to discuss various issues in business and society. The ASKA conference is biannual and has attracted hundreds of students and influential leaders in past years.

    Clubs

    Students are encouraged to join clubs which will help them build their network outside classrooms through enjoyable and challenging activities. The entrepreneur club in particular has gained popularity as the entrepreneurial spirit is heavily emphasized in Globis.

    Alumni network

    After graduation, Globis alumni continue to grow together through their human network. The Globis mutual support network provides opportunities for alumni to meet regularly and share their business experiences. Alumni can also gather at periodic alumni events and at reunions held every five years.

    Career services

    Globis Career Services provides students with career guidance to help develop their career paths and connect them with leading companies. Through career events, Globis students can learn about industries and individual companies. Students then have the opportunity to participate in an internship on their way to a full-time job.

    Full-time students who wish to conduct a thorough job search may take a second year to complete the MBA program.

    Corporate Mentorship Program

    Globis University, in collaboration with leading companies and organizations, launched its Corporate Mentorship Program in 2012. Its aim is to nurture and develop people who can change and innovate society.

    Corporate mentors offer opportunities for Globis students to broaden and deepen the scope of their learning through various activities, including on-site visits, providing information for the students’ corporate research projects, seminars, special courses, internships and job opportunities.

    Globis University offers exceptional students to its Corporate Mentor Partners, aiming to foster their development for the benefit of society. Also, through the school's corporate research projects, Globis students provide fresh insight and perspective on the corporate mentors’ management issues.

    Guest seminars

    At Globis, students can attend regular seminars by guests from around the world. These seminars provide students with opportunities to discuss business topics with both the guest speakers and their classmates.

    Globis Corporate Education

    The Globis Organizational Learning (GOL) business Globis Corporate Education (GCE) was established in 1993 and now trains over 16,000 people working for 250 of Japan's largest corporations, most of them publicly listed.

    GCE's training sessions are highly customized, using Globis lecturers and a customized curriculum.
