Biography

He was the son of Giulio Cesare da Varano, who was killed in 1502 along with Giovanni Maria's brothers, by Cesare Borgia. Cesare in this battle had captured Camerino. He was married in 1520 to Caterina Cybo (1501-1557), grand-daughter of Clement VII and Lorenzo de Medici. Together, Caterina and Giovanni Maria, had only a daughter Giulia, who in 1534 married Guidobaldo II della Rovere. The marriage was arranged by her mother Caterina, acting as regent in Caterina. The marriage linked the rule of Camerino and Urbino. The rule of Camerino was in dispute between Giulia and her cousin, Ercole Varano. Giulia would die in her 20s, thus the lands were bequeathed to the Duchy of Urbino.
