Gianni Pedrizzetti (7 September 1963 in Prato, Italy) is an Italian engineer who is a professor in fluid mechanics at the University of Trieste. His research is the application of fluid mechanics to improve cardiovascular sciences. He introduced optical flow techniques for the benefit of obtaining dynamic information from medical images, with the goal of improving heart diseases diagnostics. Pedrizzetti has published over 60 articles on peer-reviewed international journals, and is co-inventor of several patented solutions in the field of medical imaging and medical data processing. He is an author of a monograph which relates basic theoretical principles in bioengineering and fluid mechanics to the cardiovascular problems and medical solutions. He represents a purely interdisciplinary scientists bridging theoretical, experimental and numerical analysis to actual applications in clinical cardiology.

Biography

Pedrizzetti earned his BS and MS degree in 1987 from the University of Florence in the Faculty of Engineering. In 1992 he received the title of Doctor of Philosophy, in Hydrodynamics, from the University of Padova with studies on vortex dynamics and turbulence. He carried out postdoctoral studies at the University of California in San Diego (INLS) in 1992, working on theoretical aspects of turbulence, and at the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (ETSIA) in 1994. Pedrizzetti has also been a visiting scientist at the University of San Diego (USA) in 1995 and a visiting Senior Research Associate at the University of Cambridge (UK) in 1998, while he was a permanent researcher at the University of Firenze from 1992 to 1998. Soon after, he became Associate Professor at the University of Trieste. In 2006 Pedrizzetti obtained the title of full professor and continued his academic activities in biomechanics at the University of Trieste. Currently, he also serves as adjunct professor in Bioengineering in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Florence.

In parallel to scientific research in turbulence, vortex dynamics, and biological fluid mechanics, Pedrizzetti has been a pioneer in medical imaging analysis and processing of medical data, starting the development of medical imaging software in 2001. He supported the constitution of Advanced Medical Imaging Developments (AMID) in Italy and other small companies, offering them his consulting expertise. He is also a scientific consultant for various medical imaging companies in Europe and USA.

Pedrizzetti is a member of the European Society of Mechanics (EUROMECH), American Physical Society (APS), European Society of Cardiology – European Association of Echocardiography (ESC-EAE), ERCOFTACT Committee SIG 37 (Biological Fluid Mechanics) and Scientific Committee CIRHTA (Inter-University Consortium in Health Technology Assessment, Pisa, Italy). He serves as a reviewer of grant proposal for European Union, individual European and worldwide countries as well as for high standing journals in fluid mechanics, biomechanics and cardiovascular engineering; he also collaborates within the editorial board in Acta Mechanica. The American Physical Society awarded Pedrizzetti as an outstanding referee of APS journals in 2010. He was a member of organizing committee of the Euromech Colloquium on "CardioVascular Fluid Mechanics", thoughtfully designed to facilitate and encourage the interdisciplinary interactions among the leading experts in bioengineering and cardiovascular medicine towards real life medical solutions.

Projects

Since 1994 Pedrizzetti is actively involved in the scientific and technological international projects, streaming to resolve important engineering problems related to the non-invasive cardiovascular medicine and to intensify the cooperation among multi-disciplinary academic groups on the national and world level. Pedrizzetti coordinated and worked within collaborative projects with Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (Spain), University of California, San Diego (USA), University of Southampton (UK), University of Cambridge (UK), University of California Irvine (USA), University of South Carolina (USA) and Catholic University Leuven (Belgium). He was a partner in the European collaborative projects funded by the EU within the 7th Framework collaborative project, NATO, British Council and Italian Minister of Education and Research (PRIN).

Recent Pedrizzetti's inquiries are devoted to:

  • Interdisciplinary Development and Clinical Verification of Novel Intra-Cardiac Fluid Mechanics Derived Prediction Models in Heart Failure;
  • Determining Optimal non-invasive Parameters for the Prediction of Left ventricular morphologic and functional Remodeling in Chronic Ischemic Patients;
  • Development of 3D Echocardiographic Particle Image Velocimetry for Assessment of Right Ventricular Flow Pattern;
  • Cardiac fluid dynamics – Theoretical aspects, Interaction between flow and tissues, Numerical modeling, and Applications.
