George T. Goodwin Community Center

Mission

Each year, the Goodwin Community Center touches the lives of more than 800 families, individuals, seniors, and children in the Mars Hill and Decatur Township area. From working families struggling to make ends meet, to seniors gaining companionship and ways to stay healthy, the George T. Goodwin Community Center connects neighbors and families with the resources that promote independence, and lifelong growth.

Services

The Goodwin Community Center offers wide variety of social services for the community, along with a range of other services directed towards Children and Senior Citizens. Some of these services include:

Generic Services include: A need-based referral network, an energy assistance program, case management, a food pantry, and a clothing bank.

Our AmeriCorps members provide assistance through both in-school tutoring programs, out of school youth programs, and other types of service and volunteerism.

Through the Goodwin Center, children can participate in the Eagles Club which provides Stephen Decatur Elementary students with tutoring and homework help, other educational activities, and other clubs such as Boy and Girl Scouts.

During the summer, the Goodwin Center also offers a Summer Day Camp for children. The Day Camp runs for 10 weeks and is open to children aged 4 to 13 years. The program is educational, exciting, and fun, while also including a summer reading program.

Last but not least, the Goodwin Center also provides a wide array of programs for Senior Citizens in the community. Programs include hot lunches provided through the Second Helpings program, Health Education Programs, and informational programs conducted by guest speakers. Seniors also can partake in field trips, games, and other social gatherings.

Youth Program

As mentioned in the Services section, the Goodwin Center offers a Youth Program to help provide affordable child care to members of the community.
