The Gelatine Manufacturers of Europe (GME) is an association of European gelatine and hydrolyzed collagen manufacturers and was founded in 1974.

Structure

The ten leading gelatine and collagen peptide manufacturers in Europe belong to GME. They account for approximately 95% of the European and approximately 38% of worldwide gelatine/collagen peptide production. As an interface between its members and different EU Institutions, GME has its head office based in Brussels. GME is active throughout Europe and maintains a network of international contacts and partnerships, including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Health Organization. Currently Patrick Goossens is the association President and Marc Vermeulen is the General Secretary.

The association has ten members, three of which are German companies, two Italian, two Dutch as well as one French, Spanish and Belgian company each Ewald Gelatine, Gelita and Reinert Gruppe Ingredients from Germany, Lapi Gelatine and Italgelatine from Italy, Rousselot and Trobas Gelatine from the Netherlands, Gelatines Weishardt from France, PB Gelatins from Belgium and Juncá Gelatines from Spain.by. Activities

The objective and main task of GME and its members is to further develop the products gelatine and hydrolyzed collagen as well as open up new markets. GME is active in four permanent working committees. In these working committees, GME pursues its core task of ensuring that gelatine of a consistent high quality is made available to customers and consumers. Research and further development of technical standards, supporting the development of a new statutory framework for the gelatine industry and creating transparency are the cornerstones of its activities.

A key instrument for ensuring the observance of uniform quality standards is the gelatine monograph developed by GME. It defines the latest methods of analysis for all members. In order to establish uniform worldwide standards for gelatine, GME also works together with international institutions such as the FAO and the WHO. GME has been recognised and accepted as a responsible partner both by European and international public agencies.

Tasks of the Technical Committee:

  • Further development of the gelatine monograph that was drawn up by the association and which defines methods of analysis for gelatine. This monograph lays the groundwork for GME's cooperation with other associations, agencies and institutions with the goal of standardising test methods worldwide.
  • Ensure in regular independent ring testing that all relevant technical parameters of Gelatine are harmonized to ensure that customers and end consumers receive high quality products
  • Tasks of the Regulatory Committee:

  • Providing legislators with comprehensive information about the foodstuff gelatine and hydrolysed collagen
  • Providing impetus for a new statutory framework for the gelatine industry
  • Carrying out scientific studies with reputable institutes to document the benefits of gelatine and hydrolysed collagen as healthy and natural foodstuffs
  • Tasks of the Public Relations Committee:

  • Creating transparency
  • Providing information worldwide
  • Communicating the characteristics and benefits of our products
  • Tasks of the Sustainability Committee

  • Taking care of matters related to the environmental, social and economic dimension of the European gelatine industry.
