Gary Cassin

Gary Cassin (born 24 February in Dublin) is a former professional footballer who retired due to injury in 2006.

After many trials from clubs in England such as Manchester City he signed a professional contract for Longford Town in the League of Ireland in early 2002 under the then manager Martin Lawlor. That summer he was called into the Republic of Ireland u17 squad for a youth international held in the Czech Republic where he was capped against Hungary. Having impressed manager Brian Kerr he was drafted into the next squad for the European Championship qualifiers but a broken thumb in training forced him to withdraw from the squad. Gary was heavily linked with a move to Burnley during 2002, but the two clubs could not come to an agreement, so the interest was ended. At the age of 17 Gary was awarded the u21 player of the year award.

He was in the Longford Town squad for the UEFA Cup games against FC Vaduz (Liechtenstein) in 2004 and Carmarthen Town A.F.C. (Wales) in 2005. In January 2005 Gary represented the international colleges team (CFAI) in an international tournament in Tarragona, Spain. In July of the same year he came on as an 84th-minute substitute in the League Cup semi final against Cork City at Turners Cross and saved an injury time John O'Flynn penalty. The team went on to win the League of Ireland Cup, where Gary was an unused substitute. He was also a member of the squad when Longford Town won the 2004 & 2005 senior FAI Cup.

Due to complications with his groin he was forced to retire in 2006.

He currently lives in Rome, Italy, and works as a personal trainer.
