Garry Pankhurst

Garry Pankhurst (born October 1957) is an Australian actor best known for his role as Sonny Hammond in the popular Australian television series "Skippy the Bush Kangaroo."

Born in 1957 in Sydney, Australia, Garry Pankhurst gained fame at a young age for his portrayal of Sonny Hammond, one of the main characters in "Skippy the Bush Kangaroo." The show ran from 1968 to 1970, with a total of 91 episodes, and became a beloved classic in Australia and worldwide. 

The series follows the adventures of a young boy named Sonny Hammond and his intelligent, resourceful kangaroo named Skippy, set in Australia's fictional Waratah National Park. After the show ended, Garry Pankhurst appeared in a  acting role in the 1969 film "The Intruders". However, he eventually decided to step away from the entertainment industry and lead a more private life.

He exited the world of acting and transitioned into the hospitality industry, specifically managing hotels and restaurants. Eventually, he embarked on a new career in the meat export business to Malaysia, which, interestingly, involved the trade of kangaroo meat. He humorously referred to this turn of events as "Sonny's revenge."

Despite his withdrawal from acting, Garry Pankhurst remains an iconic figure in Australian television history, and his role as Sonny Hammond in "Skippy the Bush Kangaroo" continues to be remembered and cherished by fans.
