The gallery's founder, Peter Nagy originally opened a gallery with Alan Belcher by the same name in New York City in 1982. It represented a post-modern genre of deconstructionist conceptual photography, sculpture, and painting. Artists who were exhibited at Gallery Nature Morte in New York include: Vito Acconci, Steven Parrino, Thomas Nozkowski, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Keith Sonnier, Louise Lawler, Sherrie Levine, Ross Bleckner, Robert Gober, Not Vital, James Welling, Barbara Kruger, David Robbins, Peter Nagy, Haim Steinbach, Richard Pettibone, Allan McCollum, Laurie Simmons, Joseph Nechvatal, James Brown, Jennifer Bolande, Joel Otterson, Howard Halle, Clegg and Guttmann, Steve DiBenedetto, Julie Wachtel, Ken Lum, Gretchen Bender, and Cady Noland. It was one of a group of gallery's that were artist run, and sought to create greater creative freedom in the gallery system. In 1988, this gallery was closed followed shortly by Peter Nagy's move to India in 1992.

For many years Peter Nagy worked in the arts in India as a consultant and writer. It was not until 1997 that Nature Morte was officially revived in New Delhi. In 2013 January, Aparajita Jain replaced his partner Arani Bose.

Gallery Nature Morte in New Delhi was one of the first gallery spaces to be devoted to more experimental Indian contemporary art. It is responsible for helping promote challenging and experimental forms of art; championing conceptual, photographic, and installation genres within a commercial market that remains fixated on painting. The gallery used four different spaces in its first five seasons in New Delhi. Its initial identity in the Indian art world was marked by its international feel and aesthetic. In the years since its conception Nature Morte has grown into one of the most respected galleries in the international art world.

New Delhi

Since 2003 the main gallery space in New Delhi is located at A-1 Neeti Bagh. The gallery's move into the space coincided with the partnering with Bose Pacia Gallery in New York, which has since closed.
