Galerie Buchholz is an art gallery specializing in international contemporary art with exhibition spaces in Cologne, Berlin and New York City. The gallery was founded in Cologne in 1986 by Daniel Buchholz, and today is run jointly with Christopher Müller.
The gallery’s exhibition spaces are located in Cologne on Neven-DuMont-Strasse 17 and on Elisenstrasse 4-6, in Berlin on Fasanenstrasse 30, as well as in New York on 17 East 82nd Street. Since its founding the gallery has had various locations in Cologne. Its first location was at Bismark Strasse 50, in a former storage facility of the Cologne gallerist Rudolf Zwirner. In 1988, the gallery opened at Venloer Strasse 21 in Cologne. In 1990, Buchholz & Schipper opened at Albertusstrasse 26 in Cologne, a shop run in collaboration with fellow gallerist Esther Schipper specializing in multiples. In 1992, Buchholz & Buchholz opened on Breite Strasse 36 in Cologne, an exhibition space in the second antiquarian bookshop run by Daniel Buchholz’s father. Since 1994, Galerie Daniel Buchholz has been located at Neven-DuMont-Strasse 17, in the primary location of the antiquarian bookstore that his father founded. Daniel Buchholz converted the former storage spaces of the bookstore into exhibition spaces, and, since his father’s death in 1993, has continued to run Antiquariat Buchholz parallel to the gallery. This address is still the headquarters of the gallery today. The art historian Christopher Müller began organizing film programs and co-curating exhibitions in the gallery in 1996. Since 2000 he has been partner in the gallery. In 2006 the gallery opened a second exhibition space in Cologne on the nearby Elisenstrasse. In 2008, the gallery opened a branch in Berlin, at Fasanenstrasse 30 in the Charlottenberg neighborhood, and 2015, a branch in New York City, at 17 East 82nd Street at the Upper East Side, Manhattan.
In 1985, Daniel Buchholz organized exhibitions with artists John M. Armleder and Brian Eno in the former storage facility of Rudolf Zwirner in Cologne. Following this, under the name Daniel Buchholz, he mounted exhibitions of John M. Armleder, Olivier Mosset, Udo Lefin, Allan Belcher and Uwe Lausen, Ken Lum, Dieter Roth and the Canadian artist collective General Idea. In 1987, Buchholz organized a pioneering exhibition on the history of multiples as well as exhibitions of the complete graphic works of Blinky Palermo and Sigmar Polke. In the same year, Buchholz presented his first collaboration with the artist Isa Genzken in 1987. Buchholz organized her exhibition project Musix, in which he showed Genzken's concrete "World Receiver" radio sculptures in the window of a HiFi electronics store in Cologne. Following this, in 1988, Genzken had her first solo exhibition with Daniel Buchholz, and since then the artist has been represented by Buchholz as her primary gallery worldwide. In 1990, Daniel Buchholz presented the exhibition project "Samson" by Chris Burden. In 1993, at Buchholz & Buchholz, he presented the gallery’s first exhibition by Wolfgang Tillmans, whom the gallery continues to represent today.
Tillmanns, who later belonged to the worlds most renowned photographers, had his first exhibition at Galerie Buchholz in a room of 9 squaremeters
1994: Daniel Buchholz opens his exhibition space at Neven-DuMont-Strasse with the group exhibition "Sonne München" which include work by Kai Althoff, Cosima von Bonin, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Carsten Höller, Philippe Parreno and Wolfgang Tillmans. Following this, the gallery presents solo exhibitions by Isa Genzken, Wolfgang Tillmans and Maurizio Cattelan.
1995: Galerie Buchholz presents its first solo exhibitions by Kai Althoff and Lukas Duwenhögger.
1996: Galerie Buchholz presents its first solo exhibitions by Jutta Koether as well as a series of exhibitions and events titled "Glockengeschrei nach Deutz" co-organized by Cosima von Bonin, Daniel Buchholz and Christopher Müller.
1997: Galerie Buchholz presents its first solo exhibition by Michael Krebber as well as an exhibition with works by Jochen Klein.
1998: Galerie Buchholz presents further solo exhibitions by Isa Genzken, Jutta Koether and Kai Althoff.
1999: Additional solo exhibitions by Lukas Duwenhögger and Wolfgang Tillmans are followed by the first solo presentations by Jeroen de Rijke/Willem de Rooij, Thomas Eggerer and Stefan Thater.
2000: In January, the exhibition "Unisex Love Nest" by Mike Kelley is on view at the gallery. A number of works by Jack Smith are presented together with Kelley’s installation, and the gallery hosts a program with films by Jack Smith at the "Die Brücke" cinema in Cologne. In this year, the gallery also presents its first solo exhibitions with Frances Stark, Richard Hawkins and Mark Leckey. In November, the gallery organizes a seminal exhibition with the artist Jack Goldstein, the first gallery exhibition of this artist after his retreat from the art world in the early 1990s. After meeting with Daniel Buchholz and Christopher Müller in Los Angeles, Goldstein entrusts his entire filmic oeuvre to the gallery. In collaboration with a film laboratory, Christopher Müller works on the restoration of Goldstein’s film, and as a result the gallery shows a film program conceived together with Goldstein of ten 16mm films along with paintings and records from the 1970s and 1980s.
2001: In addition to exhibitions by Wolfgang Tillmans, Kai Althoff and Isa Genzken, the gallery presents its first solo exhibitions by Lucy McKenzie and Cerith Wyn Evans in the gallery.
2002: The gallery presents its first solo exhibitions with Henrik Olesen and Morgan Fisher along with further exhibitions by Lukas Duwenhögger, Jutta Koether, Richard Hawkins and Joeren de Rijke/Willem de Rooij.
2003: The gallery presents its first solo exhibitions with Tomma Abts, Julian Goethe and Silke Otto-Knapp.
2004: In addition to solo exhibitions by Frances Stark, Cerith Wyn Evans and Lucy McKenzie, the gallery also organizes an exhibition project with Peter Doig featuring his work alongside his selection of works by Jochen Klein.
2005: The gallery presents its first solo exhibitions by Katharina Wulff and Florian Pumhösl, along with a further solo exhibition by Henrik Olesen. In November the gallery shows the installation titled "Kinder Filmen" by Isa Genzken.
2006: In addition to additional solo exhibitions by Tomma Abts and Richard Hawkins, the gallery presents its first solo exhibitions by Mathias Poledna, Cheyney Thompson and Vincent Fecteau. At the close of 2006, the gallery organizes an historic exhibition presenting the cycle of works titled "Yellow Movies" by Tony Conrad.
2007: The gallery mounts an exhibition of Martin Barré with works from 1960-1992.
2008: Galerie Buchholz opens a new gallery space in Berlin with an opening exhibition of work by Marcus Bemer. (1879 – 1958) curated by Daniel Buchholz. Following this, the gallery presents its first solo exhibitions by Sam Lewitt and Cosima von Bonin.
2009: First solo exhibition at Galerie Buchholz by Simon Denny

December 2011 – January 2012: the theater director René Pollesch presents a parlor game that he conceived in the Berlin space of Galerie Buchholz with the title "Du hast mir die Pfanne versaut, du Spiegelei des Terrors“. The gallery publishes writings by René Pollesch with the title: "Der Dialog ist ein unverständlicher Klassiker. Der Schnittchenkauf 2011-2012".
2012: First solo exhibition at Galerie Buchholz by R.H. Quaytman
2013: First solo exhibitions at Galerie Buchholz by John Kelsey and Cameron Jamie
2014: First solo exhibitions at Galerie Buchholz by Stewart Uoo, Lutz Bacher and Liz Deschenes.
2015: Galerie Buchholz opens a new gallery space in New York with an opening exhibition of Ramond Roussel, curated by Daniel Buchholz and Christopher Müller in collaboration with Francois Piron. Following this, the gallery presents its first solo exhibition by Sergej Jensen.
In addition to exhibitions of gallery artists Galerie Buchholz also presents curated historical exhibitions. In 2010 the gallery mounted an exhibition of the oeuvre of Martin Wong (1946-1999). In 2013, the gallery put together an extensive exhibition about the life and work of Raymond Roussel (1877-1933). An expanded version of this exhibition opened their New York space in 2015. In the summer of 2014, on the occasion of the 70th birthday of the American curator and theoretician Douglas Crimp, the gallery organized a symposium and exhibition together with Diedrich Diederichsen, Juliane Rebentisch and Marc Siegel. The exhibition in the gallery was developed in conversation between Douglas Crimp and Christopher Müller, and the international speakers at the symposium were invited by Diedrich Diederichsen, Juliane Rebentisch and Marc Siegel.
