Galactoside O-acetyltransferase (also known as thiogalactoside transacetylase) is an enzyme encoded by the lacA gene in E. coli. The protein plays a role in cell detoxification.

Contents

Reaction

It catalyzes the following reaction:

acetyl-CoA + beta-D-galactoside → CoA + 6-acetyl-beta-D-galactoside

Structure

In E. coli, thiogalactoside transacetylase is a dimer. Its monomer consists of 202 amino acid residues. The protein has a molecular weight of 22,671.

The amino terminus of the protein is heterogenous because the initiator methionine is only partially cleaved. The protein is found in the cell cytoplasm and contains a highly hydrophobic segment in its center.
