Bess was born in Portsmouth, Virginia in 1992. Bess completed two years at the College of William and Mary before leaving the school and moving to New York where she now lives.

Bess founded the zine Illuminati Girl Gang, a feminist zine featuring only female voices.
Bess self-published a book in 2013, Alone with Other People.

Bess was one of nine performers at an event that took place in an art gallery during an evening in 2013.

In 2013, Bess read poems at the 89plus Marathon, an open mic event that was open to any performers born in or after 1989, at Serpentine Galleries during Frieze Art Fair week.
Reception

Author Roxane Gay wrote a blurb for the book, included the book in a recommendation list she wrote that was published in The Nation, nominated the book for The Millions' Year in Reading list, and included the book in a What to Read list she provided to Salon that was published among other critics' similar lists.
