Preservation

No. 4942 arrived at Woodham Brothers scrapyard in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales, in 1964 after being withdrawn from service in 1963. It was bought by the Didcot Railway Centre in 1974, who also bought 5900 Hinderton Hall.

2999 Lady of Legend

It was decided that No. 4942 would be transformed into a GWR 2900 Class, of which none has survived into preservation. It is now the newest member of the class, No. 2999 Lady of Legend. As of late 2009, most of the conversion work has been completed and work has started on restoring the boiler. Meanwhile, a dedicated group of volunteers is continuing the refurbishment of the components rescued from Maindy Hall and it should be in steam in the not too distant future.
