GEMS World Academy is an international, private school, located in Dubai, UAE. The school is managed by GEMS Education. Founded in 2007, GEMS World Academy follows the International Baccalaureate (I) Curriculum, and offers education to students ranging from KG1 to Year 13. History

GEMS World Academy was established by GEMS Education in 2007, however, the school only started operating by 2008.

GWA became an accredited IB school after the accreditation of its Diploma Programme course offered - on 19 April 2010. The Primary Years Programme has been accredited earlier that year, on 8 December.

On 30 June 2011, the Middle Years Programme offered at the school has been accredited by the IB, meaning that it now offered the three main IB courses (the 4th course, the Career related programme, is not offered).

As of December 2016, the school has 2000 students enrolled, supported by 185 teachers.

Campus

GEMS World Academy covers 42,715 sq. meters of land. A library and a planetarium are present in the building. As well as that, a 620-seat auditorium is also included. GEMS World Academy also contains a symphony center, and a designated "peace garden" on the roof, where students are encouraged to relax.

The sports facilities present include a 400m athletic track and a weather-proof artificial pitch; an Olympic sized swimming pool and a trainer pool; covered tennis and squash courts; a large gymnasium, fitness centre as well as a junior gym and indoor climbing wall.

Curriculum

GEMS World Academy follows the IB Curriculum, offering the Primary Years Programme for the elementary school students (Years 1-6), the Middle Years Programme for middle school students (Years 7-11), and the Diploma Programme for senior students (Years 12 and 13).

Week Without Walls (WWW)

Week Without Walls (WWW) is a mandatory activity, with students either taking a trip to other countries, or being assigned to a local activity. During the week of travel, students are expected "to engage in sustainable service and/or gain awareness of issues that transcend national borders". The activity counts towards Community,Action and Service for IB Diploma students, and towards Service as Action for MYP students.

Sports

All the sports activities for GEMS World Academy are provided by E-Sports UAE. As of December 2016, the sports offered include tennis, football, swimming, cricket and rugby. Other activities offered include climbing and holiday camps.

KHDA Inspection Report

The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) is an educational quality assurance authority based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It undertakes early learning, school and higher learning institution management and rates them, based on the performance of both the students and the teachers, with ratings ranging from "Unsatisfactory" to "Outstanding".

For the 2015-2016 rating, GEMS World Academy received an overall rating of "Good". The school's strong points were said to be the PYP students' attainment and progress in English, mathematics and science, the arrangements for the health and safety of students, as well as the links between the school and the parents.

The main points for improvement were said to be the quality of teaching in the MYP and DP, developing the Arabic and Islamic education at the school, and the students' overall behavior. The full report can be viewed here.
