GEARE (Global Engineering Alliance for Research and Education) is Purdue University's flagship international collaboration program that supplements the education of engineers so they are prepared to function immediately in the global workplace. GEARE is a trend-setter amongst study-abroad programs throughout the United States. The program was created by the College of Engineering at Purdue University.

Program Structure
GEARE is a program that combines work experience and study abroad. The students develop language and cultural proficiencies in both domestic and overseas locations. GEARE is a transcript-recorded experience, and provides an academic certificate upon completion.
GEARE students will be recruited during their freshman year and participate in an orientation before studying and working abroad.
Participating Countries
While China and Germany remain the most popular destinations for students, previous cohorts have traveled to Mexico, France, Spain, and India.
Qualifications
Undergraduate first-semester freshman coursework completed with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Typical prerequisite courses for engineering students include the first year curriculum.
Compensation
All domestic internships are paid positions. Other compensation varies by employer and overseas location. However, an assistantship may be available that will help pay for students travel and living expenses overseas.
Travel Costs
Some companies may provide subsidize GEARE's cost of international travel. The office of professional practice at Purdue also provides a limited number of travel assistance on the basis of need.
Application Procedure
The schedule is designed to receive applications during the freshman year, but can accommodate students with language qualifications in their sophomore year. Applications are available at Purdue's office of professional practice's website.
Successful completion of the program depends upon satisfaction of ALL requirements.
