Origins

A memorandum of understanding between UniSA and UCL was signed in September 2015, formalising their academic partnership through the Future Industries Institute. The institute combines and builds upon the University of South Australia's existing research institutes including the Ian Wark Research Institute, the Mawson Institute and Centre for Environmental Risk Assessment and Remediation. The institute also extends into complementary research capabilities across the university, including within the Division of Information Technology ad the Environment.

Purpose

The Institute is focused on "addressing real world issues and partnering with industry and end-users" and "providing a pipeline for the nurturing of talented engineers and scientists."

Research

The Institute research focus divides into four strand. They are:

  • Minerals and resources engineering
  • Energy and advanced manufacturing
  • Environmental science and engineering
  • Biomaterials engineering and nanomedicine
  • Staff

The FII's director is Professor Emily Hilder. Strand leaders include Professor Nico Voelcker (Biomaterials Engineering and Nanomedicine), Professor Enzo Lombi (Environmental Science and Engineering), Professor Peter Murphy (Energy and Advanced Manufacturing), Professor Bill Skinner (Minerals and Resources Engineering).
