Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University, formerly known as the Medical Center of Fudan University and Shanghai Medical University, is one of the oldest and most prestigious medical schools in China. It is consistently ranked among the top three medical schools in China. Fudan University (established in 1905) and Shanghai Medical University (established in 1927) merged in April 2000 to become a more comprehensive institution of higher education. On July 27, 2001, Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University was established, with Professor Wang Wei-ping as its first dean, and the original site of Shanghai Medical University was then designated as the Fenglin Campus of Fudan University.

Location
The college is located to the east of the prosperous region of Xujiahui, in Xuhui District, Shanghai, China. It is located adjacent to Zhaojiabang Road Station, served by Shanghai Metro Lines 7 and 9.
History
Reconstruction
In July 2014, Shanghai Medical College's campus began a 2-year large-scale construction project, which is projected to be complete in December 2016. New facilities will include new student residential colleges with residential towers, food services, and activity space, two research complexes, an indoor swimming center with rooftop soccer field, and a 20-story library tower, which has been granted ￥100 million yuan ($16.1 million USD) by Powerlong Group Group Development and Shanghai Haosheng Investment Group.
Education and research
Today, the college has 27 departments in the basic medical sciences and clinical medicine, 20 national key disciplines, 1 national key laboratory, 8 Project 211 key disciplines, 9 key laboratories under the supervision of the Ministry of Education or the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China, 2 municipal key disciplines and 8 Shanghai Clinic Medical Centers. It has 4 research stations that offer postdoctoral fellowships, 29 doctoral programs and 36 master programs.
The college offers undergraduate programs in Clinical Medicine, Basic Medicine and Forensic Medicine. The Clinical Medicine programs include a standard 5-year program offering the Bachelor of Medicine degree, a six-year program offering the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree, and an eight-year program offering the Doctor of Medicine degree.
As a part of Fudan University, the college offers interdisciplinary programs while featuring its focus in medicine and clinical study. The college faculty includes a number of well-known experts and professors who are highly respected for their academic achievements and medical skills. Among them are 2 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 10 Cheung Kong Distinguished Professor of the Ministry of Education of China, and 10 faculties funded by the National Outstanding Youth Foundation. At present, the college has 249 PhD advisors and 249 master advisors.
The college has established cooperative relations and exchange programs with numerous medical schools throughout the world, including those of Harvard University, Columbia University, University of Sydney, University of British Columbia, Umeå University, Osaka University, University of Hong Kong, and Chinese University of Hong Kong.
The Ministry of Education of China has approved Fudan University as one of the thirty qualified universities in China to enroll international students in both its English-taught and Chinese-taught programs of medicine.

Fudan University Journal of Medical Sciences
The Fudan University Journal of Medical Sciences (simplified Chinese: 复旦学报（医学版）; traditional Chinese: 復旦學報（醫學版）) is a comprehensive national key medical journal managed by Fudan University under the supervision of the Ministry of Education of China, and is distributed domestically and internationally. Formerly known as the Journal of Shanghai Medical University, it was founded in June 1956. It mainly publishes original articles in the area of basic medicine, clinical medicine, pharmacology and preventive medicine, but it also covers a wide variety of columns including reviews, case reports, methodologies and brief communications.
The journal is indexed in internationally renowned abstracts services, e.g. American-based Chemical Abstracts Service (CA) and Biological Abstracts (BA), Amsterdam-based EMBASE or Excerpta Medica (EM), Russia-based Abstracts Journal, and various domestic medical abstracts and academic journal full-text databases.

Zhongshan Hospital
Zhongshan Hospital (simplified Chinese: 中山医院; traditional Chinese: 中山醫院) was founded in commemoration of the late Dr. Sun Yat-Sen (Sun Zhong-shan), initiated in 1930, start building in 1935, laid a foundation in 1936, and opened in 1937. The director-general of Preparatory Committee of Zhongshan Hospital (initially named Shanghai Medical Center) was Yan Fuqing, and later Niu Huisheng was appointed as the first hospital director. It is a major teaching hospital affiliated to the Ministry of Health of China and was awarded "The Best 100 Hospitals" in 1999. The motto of Zhongshan Hospital is "Prudence, Practicality, Unity and Offering". The hospital now covers an area of 73,188m2 and has 178,687m2 of buildings.
The hospital has 1,272 beds serving 25,000 inpatients and 1,200,000 outpatients and emergencies each year. There are three affiliated branches located at Tianma Hill, Songjiang District, 1474 Yan’an Road, and Qingpu District. Among its 2,300 medical staff are 360 professors and associate professors, 600 physicians, 700 nurses and 450 technicians, 1 member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 2 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
The hospital includes all clinical specialties, except pediatrics, excelling in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, liver cancer, renal and pulmonary diseases, etc. It has been designated as the Shanghai Clinical Center for Cardiovascular Diseases and Liver Cancer. Having their head offices set up in the hospital, the Shanghai Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, the Liver Cancer Institute of Fudan University, the Institute of Vascular Surgery of Fudan University and the Nuclear Medicine Institute of Fudan University have become the major research centers of the hospital. The Organ Transplantation Center, Fudan University, is another feature of the hospital. The hospital is also renowned for its strength in abdominal surgery, orthopedics, interventional radiology, anaesthesia, ultrasound diagnosing and integrated treatment of western and traditional medicine. The hospital is undertaking annually some 100 major research projects supported by the Ministry of Health, Nation and Municipal Government. Nearly 100 items have been awarded for distinguished achievements in research by the local or central government in recent years.
Huashan Hospital
Huashan Hospital (simplified Chinese: 华山医院; traditional Chinese: 華山醫院), previously named Chinese Red Cross General Hospital, was founded in 1907. As one of the national highest-level medical teaching and research centers, Huashan Hospital enjoys high reputation for its outstanding clinical achievements and excellent services.Huashan Hospital was founded in 1907. It is the only hospital affiliated directly to the Red Cross Society of China. The motto of Huashan Hospital is "pioneering, respecting, innovating, dedicating".
Huashan Hospital has a total staff of around 2,000, with 80% medical and technical professionals, among them 619 are medical doctors, including 335 professors and associate professors. The hospital has 19 Ph.D. candidates training programs with 41 Ph.D. advisors, including 2 member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 1 member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The master's degree training programs are available in 32 clinical specialties. Many professors from this hospital have been recognized as the leading experts in their respective fields and were elected as the chairmen or vice-chairmen for the national and local professional societies.
Huashan Hospital has established 34 clinical and auxiliary departments. Among them, 10 have been granted as the national key clinical medical specialties (Neurosurgery, Hand Surgery, Pancreatic Surgery, Neurology, Integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine, Urology, Nephrology, Infectious Diseases and Antibiotics, Radiology, Cardiology and Surgery), 2 leading clinical specialties of Shanghai, 6 institutes, 10 research centers and 8 research labs. With a capacity of 1,326 beds. Huashan Hospital provides clinical services for over 20,000 inpatients annually in addition to around 1.5 million outpatient and emergency visits each year. The hospital has also set up Sino-American Huashan high-grade ward for overseas patients, Gamma Knife Hospital and special wards for local patients. Currently, a satellite telemedicine center has been constructed for the convenience of consultation and teaching services nationwide.
Children's Hospital
Children's Hospital of Fudan University (Simplified Chinese: 复旦大学附属儿科医院; Traditional Chinese: 復旦大學附屬兒科醫院) is a tertiary pediatric medical center. Founded in 1952, it is specialized in providing pediatric patient care, education and research. The hospital is the member of Red Cross of China Shanghai Branch and owns the national key discipline for Pediatrics designated by the Ministry of Education. It provides master and doctoral training programs, and postdoctoral fellowships. The hospital now has 500 beds and more than 900 staff, including 101 consultants.
The Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital
The Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University (Simplified Chinese: 复旦大学附属妇产科医院; Traditional Chinese: 復旦大學附屬婦產科醫院) is a teaching hospital developed from Xi Men Women and Children Hospital—a missionary hospital set up by an American woman—Ms Margaret Willianson in 1884. In 1992, it was approved to be the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of the Red Cross of Shanghai and was among the first hospitals to be entitled "baby friendly hospital" by the Ministry of Public Health and the Children Foundation of the United Nations and WHO.
The hospital's occupies an area of 12,000m2. There are 10 wards with 370 beds in the hospital including the Department of Gynecology, Department of Obstetrics, Family Planning, Traditional Chinese Medicine Combined with Western Medicine, Neonatology, etc. The annual number of outpatient and inpatient are 270,000 and 70,000 respectively. There are 663 faculties including 61 professors and associate-professors in the hospital.
Eye, ear, nose & throat hospital
The Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Hospital of Fudan University (Simplified Chinese: 复旦大学附属眼耳鼻喉科医院; Traditional Chinese: 復旦大學附屬眼耳鼻喉科醫院) is founded in 1952. It is the first hospital of Fudan University receiving accredited by ISO 9001. There are 354 beds in the hospital, which comprises the Department of Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Radiotherapy, Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Stomatology, Laser Therapy and Plastic Surgery. There are at present 742 staff, including 179 physicians, 242 nurses, and 171 allied health staff.
Cancer hospital
Fudan University Cancer Hospital (Simplified Chinese: 复旦大学附属肿瘤医院; Traditional Chinese: 復旦大學附屬腫瘤醫院) is located in Xuhui District, Shanghai. It is the successor of the Sino-Belgium Cancer Hospital of Radiation Therapy (中比镭定医院) founded in 1931 by Tang Yuhan(汤于翰). It has 1222 employees, including 861 professional and technical personnel, with 128 Associate Professor, 22 PhD advisors, 47 master advisors. The president is JIANG Guo-liang Dean, Professor Liu Taifu Academy for the American College of Radiology. The hospital has 881 beds, with 420,000 Outpatient Visits and 16,600 inpatients in 2007.
