Educated at Rossall School, Keble College, Oxford, and Cuddesdon College, he served as assistant bishop in Melanesia from 1925 to 1928, and as diocesan Bishop of Melanesia from 1928 to 1931. In the former role, he had responsibility for the Southern Archdeaconery based in Lolowai, Aoba (now called Ambae, but lived primarily in the Banks Islands.
