Frederick Andermann, OC (born September 26, 1930) is a Canadian neurologist and epileptologist.
He was born and initially raised in Chernivtsi, belonging at that time to Rumania, today the Ukraine. When this area was annexed by the Soviet Uniuon in 1940, his family first moved to Bucharest, than to Switzerland and France (Paris), before they immigrated to Canada in 1950, where he traind in neurology.
He is a Professor at the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery and Pediatrics at McGill University in Montreal and has been the director of the Epilepsy Unit and Clinic of the Montreal Neurological Hospital and Institute for many years. He was a founding member, president and past president of the Canadian League Against Epilepsy (CLAE), president of the Canadian Neurological Society, the Canadian Society for Clinical Neurophysiology, the Canadian Association of Child Neurologists and the Canadian Eastern EEG Society. In the International League Against Epilepsy he has been chairman of the Task Force on Classification and of the Commission on Classification and Terminology from 1993 to 1997; first vice president form 2001 to 2005, and second vice president form 2005 to 2009.
In 1972 and 1986 he described the syndromes lateron named after him together with his wife Eva (also a neurologist and epileptologt) and others.
Andermann was awarded as "Ambassador for Epilepsy" by the ILAE and the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) in 1989, with the Research Recognition Award of the American Epilepsy Society (AES) and Milken Family Foundation in 1995, the Wilder Penfield Award of the Canadian League Against Epilepsy in 1999, the Lennox Award of the AES in 2000 and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the ILAE and IBE in 2015. In 2003, he was awarded the Quebec Government's Prix Wilder-Penfield. In 2006, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
