Football is the most popular sport, both in terms of participants and spectators, in Ljubljana. Ljubljana has several of Slovenia's significant football clubs.

Introduction

NK Olimpija Ljubljana (2005) is Ljubljana's most successful club.

Stožice Stadium, Olimpija's home ground is located in the north part of the city. It is also the home venue of the Slovenia national football team.

History

First Slovenian football club Hermes was founded in Ljubljana in 1909. 2 clubs based in Ljubljana – SK Ilirija and SK Slovan participated in 1920 Slovenian League as founding members.

    There were two major Ljubljana derbies. First was between SK Ilirija and ASK Primorje between 1920 and 1936, when both clubs merged. The second was between Olimpija and Železničar after the World War II. Both clubs were dissolved in 2005.
