Flowerland is an American rock band that formed in New Haven, Connecticut, in November 1991. After the release of several cassettes and one 7" on Caffeine Disk Records, Flowerland formed their own label Kick Us When We're Down Records in 1994. Kick Us When We're Down Records released four Flowerland CDs which were supported with college radio play, touring and reviews from all over the world. In 2006, Indie Rock producer John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.) remixed six classic Flowerland songs which were recorded in 1992/1993: "Crazy Horse", "Low", "(Jim Brown's) Military Country", "glass i", "Kill Alice (Slowly) and "Flow" which were released in September 2013 as "The Caffeine Disk EP" on gypsygarden records. The Pear Main Recordings, 9 re-mixed songs originally recorded in 1994 at Pear Main Studios by Guy LaMaccia will be released in 2015.

    Flowerland forms in November 1991 in New Haven, Connecticut, after drummer Jon Lichatz responds to an ad placed in The New Haven Advocate by guitarist Steven Christofor, who was putting a band together with singer Roger Guimond. With the addition of Jef St. George on bass, band begins rehearsing at 44 Bouton Street in New Haven (Westville), CT. Jef and Jon suggest the name "Flowerland". Flowerland records for the first time with Collin Tilton at Bar None Studios in Cheshire, CT and produces cassette single "Down For The Count". Within three months of forming, Flowerland is picked up by local label Caffeine Disk Records. Flowerland begins performing regionally in CT and NY. Starts correspondence with press/fanzines and begins merchandising shirts, stickers and posters. Roger Guimond leaves band to form Lord Have Mercy. Band continues with Andrew, a singer from West Hartford, CT who performs several shows with the band before getting replaced by Matt Thornton who sings with the band for 4 months and records a four-song cassette EP. Roger rejoins the band in August 1992. In the Fall of 1992, Flowerland records at ReelSound Recording" with Dan Fiorello and single Military Country with B-side Flow is released on cassette by Caffeine Disk Records which gets instant airplay from college radio around CT.

    1993

    Flowerland continues extensive regional performing. Band records again at ReelSound Recording and releases a 5-song EP (cassette and 7”) on Caffeine Disk Records which is distributed in the US & Europe by Dutch East India Trading Company. Begins getting regular airplay on regional college radio. Jef St. George leaves band and Vid, bass player of the popular local band VMJ, (which had disbanded) joins. Shortly after, the band books a three-show weekend tour in South Carolina and Georgia, with two of the shows getting canceled. The band performs only one show in Atlanta, GA. Flowerland regroups with Jef St. George rejoining the band.

    1994

    Roger sings on Waiting For Daybreak a release by Larva featuring Todd Youth, guitarist of Murphy's Law and future Bouncing Soul's drummer Michael McDermott, which is released on Energy Records. Flowerland forms Kick Us When We’re Down Records as a means to release its music. Records and releases self-titled debut CD "Flowerland" which is mixed and co-produced by Martin Von Renolds (Murphy's Law, Blondie) "Flowerland" is serviced to 150 college radio stations nationally by Vision Trust Promotions out of San Francisco, CA. Enters top 10 throughout CT college radio in addition to heavy rotation on 39 stations in the US. Reaches and stays at number one on New Haven college radio stations WNHU and WYBC for eight weeks. Flowerland places co-op ad in Alternative Press, with Rob Garza of Thievery Corp. Also advertises debut release in the Aquarian and fanzines throughout the US, Canada and Europe. Books and performs first East Coast Tour. Establishes East Coast CD distribution with over 50 record stores and is reviewed all over the world.

    1995

    Band moves to Brooklyn (Williamsburg), NY. Records and releases second CD “Pretty Little Twisted EP” to positive reviews from all over the world. Band books and performs second East Coast Tour. Continues to perform regionally on a constant basis. Expands international advertising, distribution, promotion and correspondence.

    1996

    Flowerland breaks up while recording third release in NYC. Reforms 4 months later but without original member Jef St. George. Brenden Keefe (formerly of Blind Justice) joins band as bass player.

    1997

    Band is offered spec deal by Vic Steffens of Horizon Music Group in West Haven, CT. Records and releases third CD “Grow”. Books and performs third East Coast Tour. Continues correspondence with radio and press/fanzines throughout the world. Continues to perform regionally on a constant basis.

    1998

    Flowerland disbands. Releases FLOWERLAND 1991-1997, a two disk retrospective of all three CDs and 9 previously unreleased songs.

    2001

    After three years, Flowerland reforms briefly to showcase for record executive and manager Arma Andon (Cyndi Lauper, Godsmack) Flowerland records at Coyote Studios in Williamsburg and performs three shows in NYC where the band is filmed at Arlene's Grocery in NYC by movie director Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant, King of New York).

    2006

    Producer John Agnello remixes 6 classic Flowerland songs: "Crazy Horse", "Low", "(Jim Brown's) Military Country", "glass i","Kill Alice (Slowly) and "Flow" at Water Music in Hoboken, NJ to be released as "The Caffeine Disk EP".

    2013

    The Caffeine Disk EP is mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music in New Windsor, N.Y. The Caffeine Disk EP Flowerland's first release in 15 years is released September 2013. "The Caffeine Disk EP" is serviced to college radio by Powderfinger Promotions and receives radio play across the US. Flowerland's new release also receives stand out reviews across the US and Europe via publicists Powerderfinger Promotions (US) & Germusica (Europe). Along with The Caffeine Disk EP, gypsygarden records also releases 3 additional Flowerland recordings: Grow - Seeds & Buds - The Original CD + Acoustic Demo which includes a lost demo session of acoustic recordings. Burned Out In Brooklyn - The Lost Recordings which features 8 songs recorded in 2006 in NYC which were believed to be lost (in 2012, a cassette copy was discovered and subsequently prepared for release). The Avenue A Session an acoustic demo session recorded in 2002 in NYC's East Village on Avenue A.

    2014 - Present

    The Pear Main Recording 9 songs originally recorded at Pear Main Studios by Guy LaMaccia in 1993 is being re-mixed for a Spring 2015 release.

    Tour History

    Flowerland performed in 56 cities in 12 States opening for such notable acts as: Frank Black, Bad Brains, Into Another, Walt Mink, Screaming Cheetah Wheelies, Peter Fluid (vocalist for 24-7 Spyz), Crisis, Mucky Pup, Marky Ramone, Sam Black Church etc...in addition to performing with countless Local Bands.
