Name

The name of the municipality (originally the parish and the church) comes from the old name for the island, Flosterøya (Old Norse: Flóstr).

History

Flosta was part of the municipality of Dypvåg since 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). On 1 January 1902, the area of Flosta (population: 1,892) was separated from the rest of the municipality of Dypvåg, forming a municipality of its own.

On 1 January 1962 a merger took place between the municipalities of Stokken, Austre Moland, and Flosta as well as Strengereid area in Tvedestrand, creating the new municipality of Moland. Before the merger Flosta had a population of 1,205. Then on 1 January 1992, Moland (including the area of Flosta) was merged into the municipality of Arendal.
