Flinders medical centre celebrates 40 years

Flinders Medical Centre is a 580 bed public teaching hospital and medical school, co-located with Flinders University and the 130 bed Flinders Private Hospital located at Bedford Park, South Australia. It opened in 1976. It is one of the major public hospitals operating in metropolitan Adelaide. It serves as the trauma centre for the southern suburbs generally, parts of the Adelaide Hills and obstetrics in particular. It is the liver and corneal transplant centre for South Australia.

Contents

FMC is part of the Southern Adelaide Health Service (Southern Health) which includes the Repatriation General Hospital in Daw Park, Noarlunga Health Services, Drug and Alcohol Services South Australia and a range of outreach and community-based services.

In February 2003 the Rann Government approved funding for the construction of a $14 million acute mental health building at the Flinders Medical Centre. The building was named after Margaret Tobin, former Director of Mental Health who was murdered in her office in October 2002. In November 2007 Premier Mike Rann and Health Minister John Hill announced funding for a $153 million "comprehensive overhaul" of the hospital, which included an expanded and redeveloped Emergency Department, new operating theatres, a new cardiac care unit, an expanded Intensive and Critical Care Unit l, and new day surgery unit. In November 2009 Premier Rann announced additional funding for the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer, with links to Livestrong, which was opened in 2012 with more than 100 researchers working on cancer prevention, treatment and care.

Redevelopment

Flinders Medical Centre recently underwent a $163 million redevelopment. The centrepiece of the redevelopment is the construction of a new south wing building which is now complete. The new south wing building is a three-storey building linked to the main Flinders Medical Centre building. It includes a Birthing and Assessment Suite on level 3 and a Maternity and Gynaecology Unit on level 4. Services previously offered in the main Flinders Medical Centre building have moved into the new south wing to create room for an expansion of operating theatres and the Intensive and Critical Care Unit at FMC. The FMC redevelopment project includes:

  • An expanded and extensively redeveloped Emergency Department, including 21 additional treatment cubicles
  • Development of a new Acute Medical Unit, located adjacent to the Emergency Department
  • An expanded Intensive and Critical Care Unit, taking to 32 the total number of intensive care beds - an increase of eight intensive care beds
  • New state-of-the-art operating theatres including a first stage recovery area
  • A new Day Surgery Unit including a second stage recovery area
