Publication history
The firefriend (giant firefly) first appeared in the first edition of Monster Manual II (1983).
The firefriend appeared in the second edition under the "insect" heading in the Monstrous Manual (1993).
Description
A firefriend is a giant, intelligent insect that seeks friendly humanoids as companions. Its glowing abdominal light is normally equal in luminosity to a torch, but can be brightened and concentrated, and can fire a beam of greenish light that damages flesh.
