Background

After deciding to form the band in 1998, bassist Johnathon Ford recruited K.C. Wescott as a guitarist, David Bazan as a drummer, and Melissa Palladino violin as a violinist for recording the group's debut release. The group moved from Oklahoma to Chicago to record the four track EP. It was released in 1999 on Seatle's Made in Mexico label, and later released on Burnt Toast Vinyl.

Reception

Mike DaRonco of Allmusic praised the EP for being "Beautifully crafted pop that doesn't utter a single word" and concluded that "Unlike fellow instrumental indie outlet Tristeza, Unwed Sailor can be appreciated as something other than background music.
