Finn Wolfhard was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He is of French, German and Jewish descent. His father is a screenwriter, and does research on aboriginal land claims. He has one older brother, Nick Wolfhard who is a voice actor. As of 2016, Wolfhard attends a Catholic school in Vancouver.

Wolfhard got his first acting job from Craigslist. He made his television debut in network show The 100 as Zoran, and later as Jordie Pinsky in Supernatural.

In 2016, Wolfhard came to worldwide prominence in Netflix series Stranger Things' as main character Mike Wheeler, he auditioned for the role via video after seeing an open casting call, he recalled he did it sick in bed. The role has earned him a SAG award as part of the cast for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Wolfhard was also cast as the role of Richie Tozier in the featured film adaptation of Stephen King's It, which is set to release on 8 September 2017.

Wolfhard is also known for his appearances in music videos from Canadian Punk rock band, PUP, including "Guilt Trip" (2014) and "Sleep In The Heat" (2016).
