Methods of operation

FileSalvage offers 3 modes of operation to allow the user to recover deleted files and files lost to media fault and/or corruption.

Recover Deleted Files mode

In the Recover Deleted Files mode, the user selects the drive or device they wish recover deleted files from. FileSalvage then searches the drive/device using presets for either all known files, audio files, picture files, office files, video files or any combination of pre-defined file types. All recoverable files within the selected categories are saved to a user selected recovery folder located on a different volume then the one being scanned.

Salvage All Files mode

In the Salvage All Files mode, the user selects the drive or device they wish to recover deleted files from. FileSalvage then recovers all recognized files on that drive/device to a user selected recovery folder located on a different volume then the one being scanned.

Explore A Drive mode

In the Explore A Drive mode, the user selects the drive or device they wish to recover deleted files from. They may then select specific file types to search for or allow FileSalvage to search for all known file types. In this mode the user can also define their own file types not originally supported by the software by providing it with 10 or more examples of the desired file type and the software will learn to detect this new file format. This mode also offers the options to search free-space only and byte-by-byte or block-by-block searching. Previous saved scans can also be imported.

Once the drive/device has been scanned, the user may then manually preview the recoverable files, viewing lost images and videos along with other viewable file types, before selecting the file(s) they wish to recover. Once the file(s) have been selected they then choose a folder to save the file(s) to and the software recovers them.
