Route Description
Farm to Market Road 1301 begins as a four-lane highway (Boling Highway) in the heart of Wharton, passing Wharton County Junior College. Leaving Wharton, FM 1301 gains a rural characteristic, travelling south-southeast towards Boling, with a four way stop at Farm to Market Road 442. Continuing southwest, FM 1301 makes a brief turn to the south before entering Matagorda County and the unincorporated town of Pledger where the highway meets intersects FM 1728 as FM 1301 makes a hairpin V-shaped turn to the northeast, then curving back to the south and east into Brazoria County. FM 1301 continues on a generally east-southeast route until it intersects SH 35 just shy of West Columbia.
History
FM 1301 was originally designated in 1949 from US 59 southeast to the Matagorda County Line. Later that year, FM 1452 from the Matagorda County line to SH 36 was canceled and combined with FM 1301. In 1955, Spur 59 from SH 36 to SH 35 was canceled and combined with FM 1301. Until 1998, FM 1301 traveled further east into West Columbia, intersecting SH 36 and ending in downtown West Columbia at SH 35, which ran along Seventeenth Street. SH 35 was rerouted along a new path, intersecting FM 1301 at a point west of West Columbia and continuing along FM 1301's former route into West Columbia, making Seventeenth Street "Business 35".
