Contents

FaktorTel was founded in Queensland, Australia in April 2004 by Christopher and Allan Cowling and received an Australian government grant for providing VoIP throughout Regional and Rural Australia.

In October 2008, FaktorTel opened an additional branch using its vspPanel product in Texas in the USA with further advances into Canada, Ireland and the UK scheduled for 2009. FaktorTel USA also saw the release of partnerships with incoming number firms to allow for incoming numbers to be routed worldwide in 50 countries and 9000+ locations.

In December 2014 FaktorTel Acquired ATPNet a Division of Austech Partnerships, widely regarded as Australia's oldest VOIP provider adding additional network resources as well as increasing the customer base by approximately 5%.

In December 2015 FaktorTel was acquired by the public company Over The Wire Ltd and now operates under the Over The Wire umbrella of companies, (ASX:OTW).

Government grant

In June 2005 FaktorTel was the receiver of a government grant for the provisioning of VOIP services throughout regional and rural Australia. The grant was part of the Australian Government's COMET initiative (Commercialising Emerging Technologies) and was for a total of $60,000 AUD. The Grant concluded in June 2007 with full Australian broadband access to the FaktorTel VOIP network.

vspPanel - VOIP Project

FaktorTel developed the vspPanel project over the course of 3 years and released it to the public in 2007. The project is currently seeking funding for large scale deployment in data centers worldwide.

Using mainly open source components along with an open source operating system vspPanel is designed to allow the creation of VOIP networks using low cost hardware and co-located data center solutions. Much the same as what CPanel does for Web Hosting. The core components of the vspPanel project are the Asterisk PBX PBX system along with Linux and the vspPanel management / billing software.
