History

In 1954, the Borough of Fair Lawn organized the volunteer Fair Lawn Police Reserves under the borough's Office of Civil Defense and Disaster Control (CDDC). In 1980, the State of New Jersey reorganized the CDDC and renamed the organization the Office of Emergency Management (OEM), and the Police Reserves were renamed the Auxiliary Police where they have served in this capacity until 2016.

Present day

Established in 2017 to replace the Auxiliary Police Division, the Fair Lawn Special Police train throughout the year, under the supervision of the police department. During training and crisis, special police officers have full police powers. All officers go out on patrol in marked Fair Lawn Police vehicles and provide courtroom security. The special police are also called upon to assist during special events throughout the borough such as parades, carnivals, fireworks and special event security. In addition to these duties, special officers are also called out and utilized during emergencies for crowd and traffic control, evacuations and other police duties. At times, they have been called to assist neighboring towns with their emergencies.
